This is the first project I've ever done on this magnitude. I had so much fun and can't wait to do something like this again!
Most of the items I used for this project came from the Dollar Tree. Those items cost $1.25 a piece.
First, I had a create a plan and take measurements of my space. Remember, measure twice, cut once. Of course, nothing was cut here (except the ends of the zip ties lol).
Items used for this project:
Mini crates (10 used here)
Zip Ties (I used the clear-colored ones, but you can use any color)
Spray paint (I used Gold Metallic)
Foam poster Board (I bought 2, but only needed 1)
Shelf liner sticky paper
In my original design, I was going to take the shape of an upside-down "U", but quickly changed the pattern to allow book ends for the books. Once I had the shape of the design, I used the zip ties to connect each crate. I used the holes to insert the zip ties and snipped off the excess. I also added extra ties to reinforce the two in the center where my books are to hold the weight.
Once all of the crates are tied together, take the unit outside and spray paint the unit. Allow it to dry. Then I took the unit inside, cleaned the top shelf where the unit would sit and set it up. Once it was ready, I began taking measurements again for the foam poster boards which would be used to line the bottom of each crate. You can see them in the final picture with the shel liner on them. When that was finished, I added the liner and pushed the inserts into each crate.
Then I began filling each section of the unit with things I wanted on my desk. Some of the things were already on the desk. The rest were taken from other areas of my room. All of my mugs are now displayed nicely. The one I drink out of isn't included here. I have a designated area for my charging station (where the fan is in the last picture). Now it looks more organized and I'm very happy with how it turned out.
You can use this concept for just about anything and anywhere in the house. I'm going to do this again for the bathroom! That project, I'm not going to paint the crates lol. If you are using more than the 10 crates that I used here, you may want to attach the final project to the wall. This will prevent the unit from tipping over. And you also want to limit the weight for each crate as these are not meant for anything heavy. My books made the unit bow a little so I did use a little too much weight for these.
If you want to make the unit appear more "high-end" you can wrap the unit with different things like picture frames or wood. Using hot glue will secure the frames or wood and make it look quite nice. I chose not to do that with this project.

If you do this, please let me know how it worked out for you! I'd love to see pictures. Thank you!!
