Formatting Tips

Updated: Dec 3, 2023

When you are finished writing and are ready to publish your book, you will want to make sure the book is formatted for professional quality. If you are doing this yourself, take a look at other books in your genre to find ideas. If you are able, you can hire someone to do this for you too.

If you are formatting the book yourself, here a few tips. If you're experienced in this area, please feel free to add in your own tips. Thanks!

  • The title page should be in the same font as the cover.

  • Be sure you have a copyrights page

  • Don't forget about dedication (it is not required)

  • Chapter titles should be around 1/3 of the page down or even 1/2 the page down. You can use the same font as the cover title or at least something that matches. Don't use more than two or three fonts for the whole book. Title, author, chapter title, and font for the rest of the book. They should go well together in the genre you write. (if you disagree with this, please share your experienced information)

  • To end the chapter and go to the next chapter, use this method instead of using a "page break"---- 1. Page Layout 2. Break 3. Next Page....This will give you the ability to skip those pages for page number and title at the top of the page. It is cleaner.

  • At the end of the book, thank the reader for reading till the end. Option, you can ask them to leave a review.

  • Don't forget "about the author" page. Include the list of the other books written as well. Ebook, you can link all of the books.

  • On the copyright page and at the end of the book, include your website link and information about your newsletter (if you have one) with the link to subscribe. That way if readers peek inside your book using the Amazon feature, they can click on the links without making a purchase.

  • An idea (if writing a series), you can include the first chapter for the next book and share the link for that book

  • Chapter titles need to be consistent. Spell out the chapter number or use the number, not a combination of the two. Chapter 1, Chapter 2...Chapter One, Chapter Two....1, 2, 3, etc. You can use actual titles too. The Beginning. The Next Chapter. Or chapter and title. Chapter 1 The Beginning. Chapter 2 The Next Chapter. Choose one style and run with it. One font at the same font size. You want the heading for the title to be larger than the chapter's font.

  • You don't have to have a "title by author" at the very top (along the edge of the paper). You can choose to leave that out if you want to. Or one of the other. Up to you.

Have any tips to share?
